2. Why should I prune my tree?

Pruning your trees helps provide several factors of health. A healthy tree is like a healthy person, such that it is more resistant to disease, has good growth, uses energy efficiently, and looks pleasant. Pruning helps to address all these issues like overgrowth, and prevents future problems with thinning, like heavy snowfall. A few things to look out for:

• Dead branches: Especially broken ones, can be a point of entry for moisture, pests, and disease. Removing the dead branches and making a clean cut allows the tree to properly heal at the cut site, keeping the tree healthy.
• Snow: If a tree's branches are too dense, they may break under snow load, especially the heavy, wet late winter and early spring snows we have here in Colorado. Proper thinning can help prevent breaks by reducing the surface area on which snow can accumulate.
• Conflicting branches: Larger branches that touch can rub the bark off each other, exposing the tree to moisture, pests, and disease, like dead and broken branches. Thinning out smaller, conflicting branches not only gives a nice appearance, but prevents future issues.

4. How old are my trees?

That question is sometimes tricky to answer! The explanation? If you have ever seen a tree’s growth rings, you will notice that the rings are not always the same size because trees will grow at different rates from year to year depending on many varying conditions of nature. Also, different species of trees grow at different rates, making it difficult to pinpoint the age of a tree simply by trunk size alone. There are other ways to estimate your tree's age, however. Usually when houses are built, trees are planted around the same time. For example, if your house is 20 years old and you have a respectably sized tree in your yard, it is very probable that the tree is close to the same age.

5. Do they need to be removed due to their age?

Age alone is not a reason to remove a tree. Instead, we should be asking what is the overall health of the tree? Has it suffered any traumas such as broken limbs due to snow or wind? Is the tree too close to your house or other structures and obstructive? Or is the tree alive and thriving? If it is alive, healthy, and not bothering anybody, leave it be.

The signs that a tree is at risk of falling are a leaning trunk, rotten roots, deep cracks, holes in the trunk, dead or falling branches, and missing bark may all indicate problems that should be addressed to protect your property from damage

7. Why is it necessary for a tree company to have insurance?

Although a great tree company will use the proper precautions on the job such as using ropes and rigging when removing branches, every tree is unique. There is always a small possibility that something unexpected could occur due to natural factors in the wood of the tree. Having insurance is an additional precaution to make sure that, if any property damage were to occur, the homeowner is assured that any damage would be repaired.
